Twice each year NSSL engineers release a software upgrade to improve the capabilities of the National Weather Radar Testbed Phased Array Radar (NWRT PAR). The Spring 2013 upgrade was released this week and is now operational.
As severe weather approaches central Oklahoma this spring, NSSL/Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies researchers will be able to study fast-changing storms using a new radar processing technique.
Subtle features in thunderstorms captured by rapid scanning phased array radar could alert forecasters to the potential of severe weather.
A team of NSSL/CIMMS scientists were awarded the prestigious Professor Dr. Vilho Vaisala Award for their Outstanding Research Paper, “Rapid Sampling of Severe Storms by the National Weather Radar Testbed Phased Array Radar.”
