VORTEX2 Risk Analysis and Mitigation Project wrapped up

NSSL’s VORTEX-2 Risk Analysis and Mitigation Program (V2RAMP) wrapped up four weeks of testing in June with successful observations of storms in southern Kansas. The purpose of V2RAMP was to develop, install, and test the major communication and data sharing technologies needed by NSSL for the Verification of the Origins of Rotation in Tornadoes Experiment – II (VORTEX-2) field program in 2009/2010.

During operations, real-time Shared Mobile Atmospheric Research and Teaching (SMART-Radar) volumetric data were seen in real-time in the Hazardous Weather Testbed, and the mobile mesonet vehicles sampled numerous storms. The final tests of V2 scanning strategies were also completed, and a decent data set was collected from an undercut supercell south of Wichita, KS.

Background: VORTEX-2 is a follow-on to the multi-agency VORTEX project of the mid-1990’s designed to study how tornadoes form.

Significance: Spring 2008 field testing was an important step in assuring quality data collection during the field phase of VORTEX-2. Quality data will lead to the ability to perform better science and to develop better operational applications that will ultimately lead to better NOAA warning services.
